Hello
According to the law the international driver license is valid until you have a belgium id.
A friend of mine states, that he went to the districthuis to renew the ID, and they took the ID from him so he does not have an ID anymore until they send the new one to him, in 4 weeks. He states that he can drive with the international drivers license and the passport from his country.
Is this correct ?
IDL after id is expired

If he is in Belgium as a tourist, he can use his international drivers license.
If he lives in Belgium, the international drivers license doesn't count.

I'd be very surprised if they took his only ID and sent him on his way without any ID .jeanvcarlo schreef:A friend of mine states, that he went to the districthuis to renew the ID, and they took the ID from him so he does not have an ID anymore until they send the new one to him, in 4 weeks.
Having an ID (ID card or passport) is mandatory when you are the public roads in Belgium - even as a pedestrian.
Renewed IDs are not sent out, but have to be collected personally.
As long as he isn't officially registered in Belgium, that's correct. He states that he can drive with the international drivers license and the passport from his country.
The moment you're officially registered in Belgium, you also need a Belgian or European driver's licence.

Well, there is no way that a police officer can check if you are a tourist or not. Can they? How?Inazuma schreef:I'd be very surprised if they took his only ID and sent him on his way without any ID .jeanvcarlo schreef:A friend of mine states, that he went to the districthuis to renew the ID, and they took the ID from him so he does not have an ID anymore until they send the new one to him, in 4 weeks.

If they look into their database, they will know you are not a tourist.
