2) Apply for a provisional driver's permit.
2 options:
36 months, learner's permit B with someone who can accompany you whenever you're driving.
"voorlopig rijbewijs B met begeleider"
You can get this permit from your local community office based on the paper stating you passed the theory test
This person must comply with a number of requirements:
- must have had a driver's permit B for at least 8 years, Belgian or EU
- must be eligible for a Belgian driver's licence, that is (s)he must live officially in Belgium
- may not be exempt from driving now, nor in the past 3 years, when previously exempted must have successfully passed the examinations ruled by the Court to re-instate his or her permission to drive
- may not have acted as a "begeleider" (accompanying driver) during the last calendar year [exceptions exist for kids, grandkids, brothers sisters, including those of a legal partner]
- must be included on your provisional driver's licence
- must accompany you at all times when you're driving, including the practical exam.
You may have up to 2 persons / begeleiders to accompany you.
You'll need their full ID and driver's licence details when applying for your provision licence
18 months provisional driver's licence B
Mandatory : 20 hours of profession driving instructions with a registered driving school
(they have 4-digit numbers that show they are being government approved)
When the school thinks you're ready to drive on your own after these 20 hours, they'll issue a paper which you can take to the local community office, along with the paper that you passed the theory test, and apply for a provision driver's licence B without "begeleider" / someone to accompany you.
You may drive on your own with this provisional licence.
If someone (max 1 person at a time) does accompany you, they must comply with the first three requirements for a "begeleider" , see above
3) After at least 3 months of practicing, you may do the practical exam.
You must have someone along who accompanies you during the practical examination as well
This person must comply with the appropriate requirements depending on the kind of provisional licence B you chose, AND also have their licence and ID with them !
4) Should you fail the practical exam twice, you'll need to take a mandatory 6 hours driver's training with a registered driving school before you can take the exam again. Repeat same after every 2nd fail.
